While we know that a Suicide Squad sequel is indeed happening, all that’s been revealed about the follow-up so far is that director David Ayer will seemingly not be returning to tackle Task Force X. Now though, Joel Kinnaman has been discussing when Suicide Squad 2 is hoping to start shooting.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Kinnaman explained, “As far as I know they’re writing the script and I think the plan is to shoot it some time in 2018, but that could change. I think I’ll definitely come back for it.”
In the original picture, Kinnaman played Rick Flag – the unfortunate soul tasked with heading up the Suicide Squad for Amanda Waller.
On the director front, the RoboCop actor added, “Ultimately, I’d love for David Ayer to direct it, but if he doesn’t want to direct it then someone who is great with character and that’s able to ground the story and maybe put these characters in a more normal situation. It would be really interesting to see these crazy characters interact with regular people as well.”
As mentioned, Ayer seems to be out of the running for Suicide Squad 2 due to him having signed on to helm Gotham City Sirens for Warner Brothers as part of their DCEU. A female-centric movie, Sirens already has Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn set to headline, with the likes of Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Black Canary, and potentially even Batgirl all rumoured to appear.
In Ayer’s place, reports earlier this year saw Mel Gibson having met with Warners to discuss helming the Suicide Squad sequel, while Ruben Fleischer, Daniel Espinosa and Jonathan Levine are others to have been linked to the gig.SHARE YOUR COMMENTS BELOW OR ON TWITTER @STARBURST_MAG
