With Pacific Rim 2 having been in development for a little while now, the follow-up to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 movie has found itself a director.

Deadline has word that Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures have brought in Steven S. DeKnight to helm the Pacific Rim sequel. DeKnight is best known to genre fans for his work on shows like Buffy, Angel, Smallville, Spartacus and Daredevil. Pacific Rim 2 will mark his feature film directing debut.

The news was confirmed by del Toro as he took to his Twitter account:

So, despite DeKnight directing Pacific Rim 2, it’s also great to see that del Toro is still going to be on board for the sequel in some capacity.

At present, there’s no confirmed release date for Pacific Rim 2, with the film originally slated for an April 7th, 2017 release before being pushed to August 4th, 2017 and then being removing from the calendar completely. Despite this, Universal have previously gone on record to say that they are still committed to a Pacific Rim sequel.
