America had one of their weird holidays we don’t have this last Valentine’s Day 4-day weekend but neither President’s Day nor the mushy commercialism of St. Valentine could halt the relentless advance of THE LEGO MOVIE.
Over the 4-day weekend THE LEGO MOVIE added $63.5 million, which is just 8% down on its previous frame. The animated wonder has now made $143.8 million in just 2 weeks, and the only question now is how far over $200 million it can go. If every single news outlet hadn’t used the ‘everything is awesome’ line a thousand times already I’d probably shoehorn it in around here somewhere.
Opening into 2nd in our specialized chart is the remake of the ‘80s sci-fi classic ROBOCOP. A week after its UK debut, the ‘by consensus quite disappointing’ robo-fest bowed in the States to $25.6 million over the 4-day weekend, giving it a $30.3 million week after opening on Wednesday. While not entirely substandard, it is a little bit off previous President’s Day action releases A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD and the 2012 remake of another Verhoeven favourite TOTAL RECALL over three days. ROBOCOP’s audience broke down as 62% male and 64% over 25, which in conjunction with a B CinemaScore mean $70 million is the best it can hope for.
Bombing in 3rd is the Colin Farell starrer WINTER’S TALE, most famous for being so awkward to understand that it’s own marketing couldn’t make sense of it. It’s a fantasy apparently, also a romance for a bit. Either way it made $8.1 million over the four days, but with a $60 million production budget it’s destined for flop status.
Meanwhile, animation behemoth FROZEN just keeps making money in 4th because it can – adding an extra $8.1 million for a $378.3 million gross – and THE NUT JOB added an extra $2.4 million to bring its lifetime gross to a respectable $58.2 million.
As a final note, the apparent removal of the likes of CATCHING FIRE, HERCULES and I, FRANKENSTEIN from cinemas (or at least the absence of their numbers being reported) has brought a few outliers into the chart. Hence how CLOUDY 2 has stumbled in 10th spot in its 21st week. Just one of those things.
