Annie Wersching is confirmed to play the Borg Queen in the upcoming second season of Star Trek: Picard, which follows Enterprise Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart) in the second chapter of his life. The series is expected to premiere in 2022 and will comprise of ten episodes.

Wersching is perhaps best known for her role as FBI Special Agent Renee Walker in the series 24, and for her recurring turn on Bosch’s first season. Interestingly, this won’t be the actress’ first time venturing into the Star Trek universe. Her very first onscreen acting role was in the twentieth episode of Star Trek: Enterprise, titled “Oasis”, in which she played a Kantare named Liana.

This time, Wersching will have a more significant and recurring role as Picard’s old adversary, though the exact nature of her arc is still unknown. Though early fan speculation points to time travel being a key theme of season 2, at this point in time it is still anyone’s guess.

Annie Wersching will be only the third actress to take on the infamous role of the Borg collective’s de facto leader, an alien group distinguished by their cybernetic enhancements and Cube-shaped mode of transport who function as recurring antagonists in Next Generation, Voyager and Star Trek: First Contact. The cyborg matriarch was portrayed by Alice Krige in First Contact and Voyager’s “Endgame” episode, and by Susanna Thompson in earlier Star Trek: Voyager episodes.
