With Star Trek Beyond ready to hit the big screen later this month, it’s been confirmed that the Sulu character will be revealed to be gay in the third of the relaunched Star Trek movies.

Sulu actor John Cho revealed the news to the Herald Sun, saying, “I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out of it, which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicize one’s personal orientations.”

Star Trek Beyond will reveal that Sulu is gay and has a daughter with a same sex partner.

Of course, Star Trek has been seen as a massively progressive franchise over the decades. Whether it was giving the Enterprise a Russian crew member in Chekov whilst the Cold War was raging on, having Kirk and Uhura have TV’s first interracial kiss, or even simply having a female captain in Star Trek: Voyager’s Kathryn Janeway, Star Trek has always been open to the ever-changing, expanding world that we live in, which has made the property all the more enjoyable for that. The revelation about Sulu is also a nice nod to original Sulu actor George Takei, who came out as gay and has been a big figure in LGBTQ rights.

To be directed by Justin Lin, Star Trek Beyond is currently set for a July 22nd release.
