Now we at STARBURST do have quite the soft spot for a good, cheesy action movie from time to time (particularly STARBURT Shauna and her love of a certain Muscles from Brussels). As such, Sylvester Stallone’s EXPENDABLES franchise has been something that’s been on our radar over the last few years. Whilst the first two movies were extremely violent and R-rated efforts, this year’s THE EXPENDABLES 3 was a PG-13 movie and coincidentally was the lowest grossing in the series to date. With plans already underway for a fourth entry in the franchise, Stallone has admitted that the change to PG-13 was a massive mistake.

Speaking to CraveOnline about whether he’ll be making THE EXPENDABLES 4 an R-rated movie, Sly confirmed, “Absolutely, unequivocally yes. I believe it was a horrible miscalculation on everyone’s part in trying to reach a wider audience, but in doing such, diminish the violence that the audience expects. I’m quite certain it won’t happen again.”

Stallone added that the PG-13 rating made it easier for the core group of heroes to stay alive during these danger-laced movies. He then teased the possibility of killing off some of said group, saying, “It’s a big conflict for me because in an R-rated film it is difficult to believe that none of the heroes die. I personally just believe that the characters become identifiable and their demise could put a dark cloud over an audience exiting the theatre after seeing the film. But that may change in EXPENDABLES 4.”

In terms of THE EXPENDABLES 3, the film grossed less than $40 million in the US, although the global gross was $204 million. In comparison, the first EXPENDABLES grossed $274 million globally and the follow-up, starring that JCVD chap as the villain of the piece, took $311 million across the globe.

A fourth EXPENDABLES is being lined up, with current rumours suggesting the likes of Pierce Brosnan, Hulk Hogan and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson to join Stallone’s action-heavy franchise.

THE EXPENDABLES 3 is set to hit DVD and Blu-ray in the UK on December 8th.
