Costume changes to our favourite superheroes are nothing new, with a change usually a sign of the times. Spider-Woman, aka Jessica Drew, is the next in line to don new threads (shown below) – her first costume change since 1977!

Revealed in USA Today and bearing more than a passing resemblance to Batgirl’s new costume, Jessica’s new suit is more believable, functional and, frankly, stylish. As iconic as her skin-tight unitard was (and remains) it does smack of an industry which unfairly represents its female characters. Being one of Marvel’s most popular and compelling characters, it was genuinely insulting and saddening when artist Milo Manara’s variant cover for SPIDER-WOMAN #1 was released. Series editor Nick Lowe is keen to point out that the decision to overhaul Jessica’s look was well underway before the Manara controversy kicked off.

Harking back to her spell as a private investigator, and described by Lowe as clothes to kick arse in, Jessica’s new costume will debut in an upcoming update to the ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN mobile game.
