Ahead of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse swinging to the big screen in a matter of weeks, Sony Pictures has now moved to confirm a sequel and a spin-off for this hotly anticipated animated effort.

Courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter, Sony is already developing a straight-up sequel to Into the Spider-Verse, plus there are also plans in place for an all-female spin-off picture. Joaquim Dos Santos, best known for his work on the likes of Justice League Unlimited and Voltron: Legendary Defender, is set to direct the Into the Spider-Verse sequel, while Batman: Year One’s Lauren Montgomery is to helm the female-driven spin-off.

No further details are known on these two future offerings, although given the multiverse-spanning scope of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, there’s a whole lot of potential to be explored.

Many may be remember how Sony famously gave the A-OK for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, The Amazing Spider-Man 3, The Amazing Spider-Man 4, Venom, and The Sinister Six before the first The Amazing Spider-Man picture was even released. Of course, you’ll also remember how none of those other films ever saw the light of day following Marc Webb’s abysmal The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

To be fair, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse does look all kinds of promising, so here’s hoping that Sony’s forward planning turns out far better this time out.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is due to hit UK cinemas from December 6th.
