People have been taking the piss out of this potential project for years, but today’s the day the naysayers can eat their words, Space Jam 2 is definitely happening, and it’s got a release date to prove it – we’ll see you courtside on July 16th 2021, sports fans!

The hotly anticipated (ish) sequel will star basketball legend LeBron James, who, if the story follows that of the 1996 original (and it will), is drafted into Bugs Bunny’s sports-based war with some pesky aliens. It remains to be seen if the likes of Bill Murray will return, with only the aforementioned ‘pesky wabbit’ and (his girlfriend?) Lola Bunny confirmed via the very early teaser poster that accompanied the release date news. That said, we fully expect all our Looney Tunes favourites to feature somewhere, which will mark their first big screen appearance in 16-years, their last being Joe Dante’s little seen Looney Tunes Back in Action.

As goofy as the whole film sounds, with Black Panther’s Ryan Coogler now named as producer and acclaimed indie filmmaker/artist Terence Nance calling the shots as director, it suggests that people are taking the project very seriously, as opposed to it being a quick knockabout cashgrab.  Will this translate into a richly deserved resurrection for the stable of classic characters? We sure hoop so!
