Remember those grand plans that Sony had for Spider-Man and his world? Before Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had even hit the big screen, there was already a confirmed third and fourth Amazing Spidey movie, not to mention spin-off features for Venom and The Sinister Six. And then ASM2 was a massive disappointment, leading to those plans being supposedly canned.

The hype surrounding The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was huge, with many a fan (not to mention STARBURST staff member) massively looking forward to the film. Sadly, we were all left with a hollow feeling of disappointment when that sequel actually arrived, and Sony’s plans for the Wallcrawler took a major hit. All of a sudden, The Amazing Spider-Man 3, The Amazing Spider-Man 4, Venom, and The Sinister Six were all off the table, despite the setup work done for those films in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Things then took a further turn when Marvel Studios/Disney and Sony actually came to an agreement for a new Spider-Man, to be played by Tom Holland, to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After debuting in next month’s Captain America: Civil War, this new Spidey is then confirmed for his own 2017 solo outing. But now it seems as if the presumed-off Venom is still happening.

The Hollywood Reporter has word that Sony are once more looking to make Eddie Brock/Venom the focus of an upcoming movie. What’s interesting here is that this Venom movie will not be tied to the Marvel Cinematic Universe or 2017’s Spider-Man film. Palak Patel and Eric Fineman will be overseeing the film, with Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach on board as producers and Dante Harper to work on the screenplay.

Venom, of course, is an alien symbiote that is best known for bonding with Eddie Brock and channeling the pair’s hatred for Spider-Man. The villain-cum-antihero is a vastly powerful character, complete with all of the powers of Spider-Man but often driven by hate rather than the compassion (and quick wit) that ol’ Webhead is famous for. Over the years, the symbiote would bond with other hosts, such as Mac Gargan/Scorpion and Flash Thompson, not to mention be responsible for “others” like Carnage and Toxin. Venom would also famously appear in 2007’s Spider-Man 3, played by Topher Grace.

As ever, expect more on Venom as and when it develops.
