Wow. Seriously. Just wow. So after the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN franchise suffered from two misjudged movies, Sony Pictures looked at other ways to make a success of their Spider-Man property. Spider-Man, it goes without saying, is one of the most iconic and successful comic book characters of all time – so clearly hard to do well, right? After this latest redo was poorly-received, attention turned to spin-off movies VENOM and THE SINISTER SIX, with THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 pushed back to 2018. More recently, a story surfaced that said Sony were also looking at focussing on a female-centric team-up movie called GLASS CEILING. And now, if all of that wasn’t enough for you, the latest rumour, courtesy of the usually on-the-ball guys at Latino Review, is that there’s a plan being put into place to see Aunt May headline her own movie. Sigh…

Given how Marvel Studios have just announced CAPTAIN MARVEL and how DC has big plans for Wonder Woman, Sony are looking at throwing their hat into the ring of female-led comic book movies. Whereas the GLASS CEILING project is rumoured to feature the likes of Spider-Woman, Spider-Girl, Silver Sable, Black Cat and Silk, it’s said that this Aunt May movie would focus on May in her younger days. If the concept of an Aunt May movie wasn’t head-scratching enough, it’s claimed that the film would see May involved in some sort of espionage story, much akin to the MCU’s Peggy Carter.

The most famous attempt to focus on a younger May came in 2003’s TROUBLE comic book arc. That was a horrible concept that saw it revealed that Peter Parker was actually the result of a teenage pregnancy for May and Ben. That whole idea, thankfully, was essentially scrapped after fans refused to swallow this ridiculous change to the origins of Peter.

It really does seem like Sony are having huge problems working out what to do with the Wallcrawler and his supporting characters. Can it really be that hard to just tell an action-packed, entertaining, engaging, emotional Spider-Man story that focusses its attention solely on Webhead and his day-to-day troubles? Once that has been successfully done, then introduce and focus time on other characters.

To us, all of this just seems to be Sony clutching at straws in a desperate attempt to keep up with what Marvel Studios has been doing and what Warner Brothers are looking to do with their DC properties. Can we not just have some sort of moral decision to give Spider-Man over to Marvel Studios to use in a monster CIVIL WAR arc? Please? Pretty please?

As ever, expect more on this as it develops.
