Following last week’s news that Sony Pictures was developing a Venom movie (setting the film for an October 5th, 2018 release), now comes word on another Spider-Verse effort.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Sony now also has plans for a movie that will see Black Cat and Silver Sable team up. And yes, this, and Venom, will all take place independently of the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe that sees Tom Holland swinging around as Spider-Man.

This isn’t the first time that such a film has been in the sights of the studio, with Westworld’s Lisa Joy-Nolan previously having worked on a script for just such a team-up picture. This time around, Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok’s Chris Yost has been brought in to pen the screenplay.

For those not familiar with Black Cat and Silver Sable, both characters have existed in the Marvel comic book world for over 30 years now. Felicia Hardy, aka Black Cat, debuted in 1979 and is essentially Marvel’s spin on Catwoman. A cat burglar who can bring bad luck to people, this villain-cum-antihero has also been romantically involved with Peter Parker at times over the years. Where Silver Sable is concerned, she made her bow back in 1985 and is a badass mercenary who’s behind the Silver Sable International firm. As the leader of the Wild Pack, she has come into the crosshairs of Spidey and the greater Marvel world at times, and is another who just about verges on the right side of the game when it comes to heroes and villains.

Sony developing a Spider-Man-driven world without Spider-Man, and when a Spidey already exists in the MCU, is certainly a questionable move and one that could well confuse casual moviegoers down the line. Still, Sony creating a Spider-Man world away from the MCU means that they don’t have to share their profits for such films with Marvel Studios/Disney, and we all know that the ever-important dollar, dollar is always deemed far more vital than actually doing things sensibly and in a way that the majority of audiences want. But, hey ho, what do we know…

Up next for all things Wall-crawler is Tom Holland’s solo bow as ol’ Web-head when Spider-Man: Homecoming hits the big screen on July 7th. Holland’s Spidey is also confirmed for May 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. Elsewhere, Venom is pegged for that aforementioned October 2018 date, while Sony has an animated Spidey movie booked in for a December 21st, 2018 release.
