With Star Trek: Discovery confirmed for next year, it looks as if the show has found its lead!

EW is reporting that Sonequa Martin-Green, best known to genre fans as The Walking Dead’s Sasha, has signed on to play the Lieutenant Commander at the centre of the series. This is hot on the heels of Shazad Latif, Chris Obi and Mary Chieffo joining the show as Klingons, and these new additions join previously announced cast members Doug Jones as Lt. Saru, Anthony Rapp as Lt. Stamets, and Michelle Yeoh as Captain Georgiou, a character who will be in command of another Starfleet ship.

The early plot details for Discovery have it taking place a decade or so before the original Star Trek and approximately a century after Earth had first contact with the Klingons. It’s believed that the timeline will see a period where the Federation and the Klingon Empire are involved in a Cold War-esque standoff.

Star Trek: Discovery will debut in May 2017 on CBS in the US, with the show then heading to CBS All Access following its premiere. In the UK and a whopping 187 other countries, the show will land on Netflix and each new episode will be made available just 24 hours after airing in the United States.
