With a whopping four Avatar sequels in development, all is being kept hush-hush on James Cameron’s Pandora-set franchise at this stage. Still, whilst speaking to SuperheroHype to promote A Monster Calls, Sigourney Weaver, who’ll be returning as Dr. Grace Augustine for the sequels, has been discussing what she knows about where the Avatar franchise is heading.

Revealing that a lot of what’s already been shot likely won’t make it to the big screen, Weaver explained, “I think what he’s been doing is trying to develop the technology. We’re going to do all four simultaneously, so I think he’s trying to make sure that he has really done all the groundwork so when he really starts these four we’ll be able to hit the ground running. So I don’t think he’s actually… he is experimenting. I don’t know if any of that would end up in the movie ‘cause it’s not actually any of the story, but I’m sure he’s trying to figure out how to photograph an animal in this situation, things like that, so on the day he doesn’t have to waste time finding out.”

When asked whether she’s had any involvement in said experimentation, the actress added, “Conversationally, yes. I’ve read three of the four scripts, and if you liked the first one hold onto your hat. It is so ambitious and it is so moving. Nothing like it.”

At present, the first Avatar sequel is set for a December 2019 release, with a third film in the series arriving in December 2020, a fourth film landing in December 2022, and then the fifth and final franchise entry hitting the big screen in December 2023.

To date, all that’s known about these films is that Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Stephen Lang will be returning alongside Sigourney Weaver.
