Last week brought news that Roberto Orci had departed the STAR TREK 3 director’s chair, with it initially believed that Edgar Wright was being lined up to helm the next installment in the relaunched franchise. Now comes a report from Deadline that claims there are actually four names being looked at to fill the void left behind by Orci.

The names said to be in the frame are RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES’ Rupert Wyatt, SAFE HOUSE’s Daniel Espinosa, FAST & FURIOUS’ Justin Lin, and THE IMITATION GAME’s Morten Tyldum. It was also reported earlier in the day that MOON’s Duncan Jones was another name on the shortlist, although he took to Twitter to play down any involvement, saying, “Very flattering being on short list for Star Trek, but won’t be doing it. Absolutely MUST make my own thing next, or I’ll die of old age!”

When Orci left the project, it was believed that the film would still move forward with the script that had been put in place by Orci, Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne, although that is now up in the air. Either way, the initial plan was for STAR TREK 3 to be released in 2016 in order to tie in with the franchise’s 50th anniversary. If that is still to happen, things will have to start moving along early next year.

Expect more on this as it develops.
