Having won the Best Picture gong at the Japanese Academy Awards, Shin Godzilla (you can find our review here) is to get a sequel.

For anyone who’s seen the film, the end of the movie left things wide open for a follow-up due to a major cliffhanger. Co-director Hideaki Anno – who helmed Godzilla along with Shinji Higuchi – revealed the plans for a sequel at a recent Tokyo event that saw music from Shin Godzilla and Neon Genesis Evangelion played.

At that event, the news was revealed via a big screen message that translates as “Please expect the next installment of Shin Godzilla, and Shin Evangelion Gekijōban.”

There’s no further details on any of this at this early stage, but expect more as and when we get it. This follows the recent news that an animated Godzilla series is heading Netflix later this year, while there’s already a sequel to Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla in development – a sequel that will lead to the Kong vs. Godzilla crossover picture.
