In the wake of their success with Shadowrun Returns, and the hype surrounding the upcoming Hong Kong release, Harebrained Schemes made a special announcement. Shifting gears from one late 80s tabletop game to another, the developer is planning its next big crowd funding project to focus upon a mech combat title. Not just any mech game but the granddaddy of them all, BattleTech itself.

Along with confirming that creator Jordan Weisman is fully supporting this project, Harebrained Schemes have heavily emphasised that the game will have a strong narrative drive. Along with being “steeped in the feudal political intrigue of the BattleTech universe” it is set to follow an “open-ended Mercenaries-style campaign that blends RPG ‘Mech and MechWarrior management with modern turn-based tactics.”

Those who have played Shadowrun: Dragonfall can fully attest that strong, focused writing, choices and turn based combat are very much this developer’s forte. Having shown they can write, balance and develop a myriad of character driven plots orbiting a main threat, many hope this will offer the strong storytelling bereft in recent games. With the closure of Mechwarrior Tactics thanks to Infinite Games Publishing’s inept management, and Mechwarrior: Online’s tarnished reputation, many fans are hoping this will be a return to form for the franchise.

The crowd funding effort is set to begin in fall of this year.
