Hollywood’s desire for fresh things to adapt into feature films has taken a turn for the strange recently as Gail Katz has obtained the film and television rights for German board game SETTLERS OF CATAN.

Katz is apparently a long-time fan of the thirty-year old board game. SETTLERS OF CATAN is a multiplayer strategy game set on the fictional island of Catan. Players build roads, trade resources and avoid bandits whilst trying their best to hamper the progress of their competitors. It has sold over 22 million copies since its launch and is famous worldwide.

Hollywood doesn’t have the best of track records when it comes to movies based on board games; 2012’s super-flop BATTLESHIP was roundly criticised for its poor plot and bad acting. SETTLERS OF CATAN might fare better; not only are the game’s creators going to be involved with the production, the game also has numerous expansions and variations, some of which have something resembling a plot. Which is more than can be said for the movie version of BATTLESHIP.
