Remember that TV series of SCREAM we were periodically threatened with last year? Turns out it’s still actually happening and has now had its principal cast of unknown pretty young things announced along with their characters.

Willa Fitzgerald will play Emma Duval, a classic beauty whose looks and popularity hide a natural shyness and intellectual nature, and whose new life with the “in crowd” leaves her estranged from her childhood best friend, Audrey. Amy Forsyth will play Audrey Jensen, the daughter of a Lutheran pastor and an artsy loner who aspires to be a filmmaker. John Karna will play Noah Foster, a creative computer genius with a vast knowledge of pop culture and the tech world who is best friends with Audrey. Carlson Young will play Brooke Maddox, the charismatic leader of the popular crew whose personality vacillates between bubbly sweetness and ferocious sex appeal. Amadeus Serafini will play Kieran Wilcox, the mysterious new kid in town with a dark side and a tough exterior that hints at experience beyond his years.

Although the above descriptions might sound like tedious throwbacks to hackneyed teenage character archetypes, given the self-aware irony that is the SCREAM hallmark it’s entirely possible this is intentional. The pilot will be directed by Jamie Travis and scripted by Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin.

A little reassurance can be taken from showrunner Jill Blotevogel having previously written for the likes of STARGATE: ATLANTIS, THE DEAD ZONE, A TOWN CALLED EUREKA, TIN MAN and MOONLIGHT. However, deliberately evoking clichés is a dangerous path to tread, as you run the risk of merely supplementing the derivative mire of mundanity you set out to satirise. It’s going to be interesting to see how this eventually plays out.

SCREAM will air on MTV in America.
