Comics publisher Vital Publishing are to release their first trade paperback, a collection of John Farman’s horror title The School of the Damned, subtitled Force Majeure.
“In Silvis Sunt Umbre” (There Are Shadows in the Woods) reads the school’s motto, and this doesn’t just refer to those cast by the light of the bright autumn moon. Gathering the six issues of the comic’s first story arc (reviewed here, here, here, here, here and here), Force Majeure introduces us to its twisted world of Gothic horror populated by monsters both fantastical and all too human. Icons of classic cinema and literature such as Count Orlock, Dr Caligari and Victor Frankenstein take centre stage along with the occasional character from mythology like Medusa, as they defend their home from an interloping scourge of Nazis looking to appropriate the monsters’ power for their megalomaniacal rampage, as well as puritanical monster hunters who believe it their sacred duty to cleanse the Earth of creatures of the night.
Supplemental additions include the usual material like character sketches, test artwork and a cover gallery, along with a couple of side-by-side comparisons juxtaposing the text of the original script with the corresponding splash pages from the completed comic. Also included is the FrankenJenny short from Tales of the Damned #1, a prototype story highly personal to Farman that predates the series proper, telling of prejudice against Frankenstein’s ‘daughter’ Jennifer.
Appropriately available in plenty of time for Halloween, Force Majeure will be officially launched at City Centre Comics in Glasgow on Sunday, October 25th.SHARE YOUR COMMENTS BELOW OR ON TWITTER @STARBURST_MAG
