Following Sony Pictures recently nabbing the rights to Emil Ferris’ My Favorite Thing is Monsters graphic novel, now comes word that the adaptation is close to landing a director.

As per Deadline, Sam Mendes, best known for the likes of American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Skyfall and Spectre, is in talks with Sony to direct the film.

The graphic novel itself was only published this past February, and the official blurb on the tale reads:

Set against the tumultuous political backdrop of late ‘60s Chicago, My Favorite Thing is Monsters is the fictional graphic diary of 10-year-old Karen Reyes, filled with B-movie horror and pulp monster magazines iconography. Karen Reyes tries to solve the murder of her enigmatic upstairs neighbour, Anka Silverberg, a holocaust survivor, while the interconnected stories of those around her unfold. When Karen’s investigation takes us back to Anka’s life in Nazi Germany, the reader discovers how the personal, the political, the past, and the present converge.

A follow-up story, My Favorite Thing is Monsters Vol. 2 is already set for release later this year, with the plan being for that to hit shelves on October 10th.
