After a few months of speculation, it’s now official: Ryan Coogler will be directing Marvel Studios’ Black Panther.

Coogler has won a whole heap of praise for Creed, released in UK cinemas this week and featuring a turn from Sylvester Stallone that saw him win a Golden Globe this past weekend, and he’ll now be helming the Chadwick Boseman-starring Black Panther.

On this announcement, Marvel’s Kevin Feige said, “We are fortunate to have such an esteemed filmmaker join the Marvel family. The talents Ryan showcased in his first two films easily made him our top choice to direct Black Panther. Many fans have waited a long time to see Black Panther in his own film, and with Ryan we know we’ve found the perfect director to bring T’Challa’s story to life.”

At present, Black Panther is set for a February 16th, 2018 release, although T’Challa himself will make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in May’s Captain America: Civil War.
