With Universal’s redo of The Mummy now gaining traction, it’s being reported that Russell Crowe is in talks to join the film.

Deadline has word that the Gladiator actor is in early talks for a role described as “Jekyll-like”. Whether that means he’ll actually be playing Dr. Jekyll and/or Mr. Hyde remains to be seen, but given how Universal is currently planning out an entire shared universe of monsters and monster movies, it could well be that we’ll be seeing this character spin-off to his own movie at some point.

Additionally, it’s believed that Tom Hardy was close to landing the role in question, with Javier Bardem, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Eddie Redmayne all also considered for the gig before the studio settled on Crowe. Given the names who were in the frame for this mystery role, it appears that it will be a major one.

Currently in production in London, The Mummy will star Tom Cruise’s special ops agent battling Sofia Boutella’s titular monster. Also on board for the film are Jake Johnson and Courtney B. Vance. The movie will be a launching point for Universal’s upcoming shared universe; a universe that will also see us introduced to new takes on old favourites such as The Wolfman, Van Helsing, The Invisible Man, Bride of Frankenstein, and The Creature from the Black Lagoon.

At present, Alex Kurtzman’s The Mummy is set for a June 9th, 2017 release.
