With Independence Day: Resurgence hitting cinemas later this year, it’s now been announced that the Royal Albert Hall will house a showing of Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day accompanied with a live performance of David Arnold’s famed score.

Aliens will invade one of London’s most iconic buildings this year – to the unforgettable accompaniment of a classic David Arnold score.

Independence Day, the explosive ‘90s action blockbuster, is the latest film confirmed for the venue’s major 2016 film-and-live-orchestra programme, following Raiders of the Lost Ark, Gladiator, E. T. and a dazzling new show celebrating classic Westerns.

As a special treat for fans, this one-off, 20th anniversary event will also include a unique pre-show talk from composer David Arnold, discussing his work scoring Independence Day, Sherlock and five Bond films – as well as the closing ceremony of the 2012 Olympics – before the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra takes to the stage to accompany the movie in full.

David Arnold said: “It’s a film that doesn’t pretend to be anything other than what it is: a huge piece of cinematic fun with characters you learn to love, bad guys you learn to hate and spectacle that satisfied a lot of inner children who longed to smash things up. The score held hands with these ideas and followed suit.

“The Royal Albert Hall is such an iconic venue and a personal favourite of mine – it’s always an honour to be on the stage especially with your own material. The Hall screams ‘event’ and Independence Day was one of the biggest event movies of the last 30 years.

“Hopefully my pre-film talk will get people excited all over again to see it and to really appreciate the amazing work that is being done by Nicholas Dodd – in both his orchestrations and conducting – and also the players, who may not have much puff left at the end of the evening.”

Independence Day is a thrilling, all-action movie – directed by Roland Emmerich – about a bunch of disparate Americans banding together to see off a terrifying alien invasion. It confirmed Will Smith’s status as a major new star and features commanding supporting performances from Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Mary McDonnell and Randy Quaid.

It was the most popular film of its year – second only then to Jurassic Park in the all-time box-office list – and won an Oscar for its jawdropping effects work. A long-awaited sequel arrives at cinemas in June.

This 20th anniversary show on Thursday 22 September will now bring its stunning score front and centre.
