In terms of out of left-field news, how’s this: Robert Rodriguez is going to be directing a live-action Jonny Quest movie.

Deadline is reporting the news, revealing that the director of the likes of From Dusk Til Dawn, El Mariachi, Spy Kids, Sin City, Planet Terror and Machete will be co-writing and helming Warner Brothers’ live-action adaptation of the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon series.

Assisting Rodriguez with the script will be Terry Rossio, with the pair reworking an existing draft from Dan Mazeau. Adrian Askarieh and Dan Lin will be producing.

The original Jonny Quest cartoon debuted way back in 1964, and surprisingly only initially ran for 26 episodes. Despite this, it garnered quite the following. Premise-wise, the plot focussed on 11-year-old Jonny Quest, the smart son of Dr. Benton Quest, and adoptive brother Hadji. The pair got up to a myriad of adventures, often flanked by Dr. Quest’s no-nonsense bodyguard, Race Bannon. Even though the show was cancelled in 1965, it would return in both the ‘80s and ‘90s as well as spawning various comic books.

This live-action movie has been in development for a fair few years, with Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron both up for roles at one point and Richard Donner even being looked at to direct.

Expect more on this as and when it develops.
