Hot on the heels of him reportedly being in talks to helm the Escape from New York remake, Robert Rodriguez has signed on to direct STX Entertainment’s animated Ugly Dolls movie.

Variety broke the news, with Rodriguez, of course, known to genre fans for the likes of the El Mariachi Trilogy, From Dusk Till Dawn, the Spy Kids franchise, the Sin City movies, Planet Terror, and the Machete pictures.

As for Ugly Dolls, if you’re not familiar with them, they’re a brand of plush toys that are basically just a bunch of, well, you guessed it, ugly dolls. Created by David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim, the toys were launched in early 2001 and known simply as “Uglydolls” at that point.

STX picked up the cinematic rights to the Ugly Dolls property back in 2015, and Rodriguez will also produce the animated effort through his Troublemaker Studios. At present, the Ugly Dolls film has been pencilled in for a May 10th, 2019 release.
