The author and editor Frederick Pohl has died aged 93. Pohl’s career spanned more than 70 years with his first professional sale being made in 1937. He edited Galaxy between 1959 and 1969 along with sister title If which won the Hugo award three years running for best professional magazine.

His 1977 novel Gateway won four ‘best of the year’ award including the Hugo, Locus, Nebula and JW Campbell Memorial award. He wrote and blogged up to his death with the novel All the Lives he Led being published in 2011. More recently he also blogged as a science fiction fan with his blog The Way the Future Blogs winning the best fan writing Hugo in 2010.

I was lucky enough to meet Fred Pohl in 1984 and it was very clear that he loved science fiction and writing in particular and that every day he made a point of producing 500 words. He will be missed.
