After years of relative inactivity, Lord of the Rings fans are getting their fill of exciting new content: not only did Super Bowl Sunday see the trailer released for the upcoming Amazon series The Rings of Power, but we now hear that The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim (first announced in June 2021) anime movie has been set for April 12th, 2024.
The movie from New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation explores and expands the untold story behind the fortress of Helm’s Deep, delving into the life and blood-soaked times of one of Middle-earth’s most legendary figures, the mighty King of Rohan, Helm Hammerhand. Thee War of the Rohirrim takes place 250 years before the events of Peter Jackson’s trilogy; The Two Towers included a lengthy battle sequence taking place at Helm’s Deep.
Kenji Kamiyama (Blade Runner: Black Lotus, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) is directing from a script from Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, based on a story by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance). A voice cast for the stand-alone anime will be announced soon, promises Warner Bros.
