Over the last few years, Ridley Scott’s career has had a sci-fi renaissance; with the divisive (but brilliant) PROMETHEUS and its upcoming sequel, THE MARTIAN well on its way, and a BLADE RUNNER sequel in the works, Scott won’t be coming out of light-speed anytime soon.

Syfy have signed the director up to produce a miniseries adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke’s 2001 sequel, 3001: THE FINAL ODYSSEY. Based on the 1997 novel, the story focusses on Dr. Frank Poole, who is awakened by HAL after 1,000 years in deep sleep. Poole is then, unsurprisingly, returned to an Earth that is radically different.

Breaking the news, /Film claims, “Some of its notable features include the BrainCap, a brain-computer interface technology; genetically-engineered dinosaur servants; a space drive; and four gigantic space elevators located evenly around the Equator. Human beings have also colonised the Jovian moons Ganymede and Callisto. TMA-1, the black monolith found on the Moon in 1999, has been brought to Earth in 2006 and installed in front of the United Nations Building in New York City.”

The project has got the full support of both the estates of Stanley Kubrick and Clarke. 3001 will debut in 2015.
