With Donnie Darko getting a whole lot of love in the past few months thanks to Arrow Video giving Richard Kelly’s 2001 cult favourite a new, crammed 4K release, the director has talked about his plans to delve into that world once again in the future.

Speaking to HMV, Kelly said, “I think there’s something much bigger and more ambitious to do in that universe. It’s big and expensive and I think there’s time to get to that. I want to make sure we’ve got the budget to do it justice and not to compromise anything. Another story in this world needs resources and we need to have that in place. I need to get my next film out of the gate and then we can go back and look at it.”

This wouldn’t be the first time that this particular universe has been revisited, with 2009 giving us the so-so-at-best S. Darko – a film that focussed on Donnie’s sister Sam, and one that didn’t have any involvement from Richard Kelly.

Whether anything comes of this, we’ll have to wait and see, but let us know in the comments section whether you’d be keen for a further follow-up to the beloved Donnie Darko.
