As DK continue with their recent wrestling-related releases, up next we have a swanky looking number that explores some of professional wrestling’s greatest rivalries. Is this release a lopsided mess, though, or is this a must-have addition for grappling fans to get to grips with?
Put together by Jake Black, this 200-page effort attempts to cover a whole host of bases for a whole host of people. And to be fair to Black, this is something that Greatest Rivalries does with ease; encompassing each and every decade from the 1970s through to the modern era.
If you’re more of a veteran wrestling fan, the book has so much content that will have you hazily reminiscing, and one of the biggest compliments to Black is that no particular time period or era seems short-changed. It’s also a brilliant idea to have the book play out chronologically, with the read beginning with Bruno Sammartino vs “Superstar” Billy Graham and then playing out naturally through until the AJ Styles vs Shinsuke Nakamura feud of last year.
Whether you’re a casual wrestling fan or an uber-nerd, there really is something for everybody in Greatest Rivalries. In a who’s who of the wrestling business, names such as Sammartino, Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Ultimate Warrior, Ric Flair, The Undertaker, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Steve Austin, The Rock, Brock Lesnar, John Cena, Randy Orton, Edge, CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, Chris Jericho, Roman Reigns and AJ Styles are all put in the spotlight as just some of the superstars whose greatest feuds are showcased. Likewise, it’s refreshing to see the female stars of today and yesterday also getting their time in the spotlight, be that Wendi Richter, Alundra Blayze, Chyna, Trish Stratus, Lita or current names such as Natalya, Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks and Bayley.
Adding even further to the charm of Greatest Rivalries, the book is easily digestible and is delivered in a way that makes it a release that is perfect as something you can pick up and read a few pages of. Similarly, it serves as a contagious read that you may find yourself struggling to put down once you get immersed in the world of spandex.
The actual content featured here sees each rivalry detailed across a double-page spread, with a brief summary of said rivalry’s key moments and some fun trivia notes thrown in for good measure. It’s light, it’s breezy, and the way that the overall package is put together will have you grinning from ear-to-ear as you get regaled with memories of yesteryear.
For wrestling fans both old and young, veteran or new, diehard or casual, WWE Greatest Rivalries is an absolute blast.
