WAR OF THE SPARK PLANESWALKER DECK – JACE / PUBLISHER: MAGIC: THE GATHERING / RELEASE DATE: OUT NOW

Jace Beleren is arguably the hero of the Magic: The Gathering storyline. His schtick is that he’s a master of mind reading and illusion and happens to be super smart. Given that Magic is a tactical game that rewards long-term planning and being able to guess your opponents next move, we can see why he’s so popular amongst gamers.

His custom deck for the War of Spark release is blue/green, which means it’s heavily defensive and tends to focus of spoiling your opponent’s moves at key times. This set comes with the custom card Jace, Arcane Strategist. It powers up by drawing cards, which is one the things blue cards excel at. You can use this power (called loyalty) to make your creatures unblockable, which is potentially a quick and brutal win if played well. This power is a static ability, something new to the War of the Spark release.

The deck includes cards such as Laboratory Maniac, which is a potential instant win if you get your cards to come out and go away in the right order. Bloom Hulk and Primordial Worm let you bring out big bad beasties to stomp your foe. Spark Double lets you clone creatures and planeswalkers with an extra boost. Jace’s Ruse lets you draw the planeswalker card faster and interrupt your opponent’s ability to draw creatures. Jace’s Projection lets you boost your loyalty whilst drawing cards.

This is much more aggressive style than fans of Jace may be used to. It’s got more in the way of ‘crush and kill’ then ‘outwit and deceive’. At its core it’s a card draw engine, designed to everything out onto the table as swiftly as possible, allowing the player to improvise various winning strategies. This is also thematic; War of the Spark is meant to be the ultimate battle and conclusion of the game’s ongoing storyline, so it makes sense that the play style is more epic.

With unique card and a code to add this deck to the online version of the game, War of the Spark Planeswalker Deck – Jace is a great deal for fans of Jace, and that pretty much means everyone who plays Magic: The Gathering.
