COMIC BOOK REVIEW: VAMPIRELLA #100 / AUTHOR: VARIOUS / ARTIST: VARIOUS / PUBLISHER: DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT / RELEASE DATE: JANUARY 14TH
Marking 100 issues since her triumphant relaunch back in 2010, this 48-page special collects together Vampirella writers past and present alongside new blood. Since she’s been with us since ’69, it’s only fitting that celebrations are in order.
The first issue, penned by first-time Vampirella writer Tim Seeley, is the best of the bunch, with Seeley’s script possessing all the pomp and grandiose of gothic literature. Jim Terry’s art is simple yet deadly effective, and gives the most honest representation of the character, in a story that’s Elvira meets Buck Rogers by way of Mad Max, and as fun as each.
The second issue, penned by Eric Trautmann with art from Dave Acosta is the least effective, featuring a water troll spinning stories for tobacco. The third, however, is the funniest with ghosts recounting how they died in various awkward ways before their killer gets his comeuppance by everyone’s favourite alien vampire.
Despite Terry having the most back-to-basics art approach, Javier Garcia-Miranda on issue 4 has the comeliest art in the collection, soft with an almost coloured pencil effect. It’s entertaining enough, but doesn’t beg a re-read. Issue 5 features a whole host of vampire babies, spawned from current Vampirella writer Nancy A. Collins.
It’s a great piece for collectors and fans, but the content is mostly underwhelming. It’s worth picking up for some of the stories, but it’s really only for the masterful artwork you’ll want this one.
