TV Review: THE WALKING DEAD Season 4, Episode 10 ‘Inmates’

After last week’s After caught us up with Rick (Andrew Lincoln), Carl (Chandler Riggs) and Michonne (Danai Gurira), this week’s episode starts by reintroducing us to Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Beth (Emily Kinney). With Daryl seemingly sapped of optimism and hope, Beth’s glass is still firmly half full – for now, at least. As this pair debate whether anyone else from their group is actually still alive, our attention is flipped over to the unlikely trio of Tyreese (Chad Coleman), Lizzie (Brighton Sharbino) and Mika (Kyla Kenedy). What’s more interesting about this particular group is who else they have with them and who else they stumble across, as we’re given answers to certain questions and have further questions thrown up surrounding events going forward. Still, the most intriguing element of all of this, of Inmates in general, is the actions of Lizzie. Let’s just say, it seems as if we’ve got quite the little psychopath developing, which again throws up questions about certain goings-on from earlier in the season.

Away from these two camps, we’re also updated on where Maggie (Lauren Cohan), Bob (Lawrence Gilliard Jr.) and Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) are, as they’re on the hunt for Maggie’s beau, Glenn (Steven Yeun).  Nothing of major note really happens with the threesome here, but Glenn gets to kick some major ass as he wakes up alone and confused back at the once-safe prison. Attempting to fight his way out of the walker-ridden hell-hole, Glenn comes across Tara (Alanna Masterson); a surviving member of the group that was so easily brainwashed by David Morrissey’s The Governor earlier in the season. Unwilling to fight and having to break the news of Hershel’s demise to Glenn, Tara finds herself in the middle of things whether she likes it or not. And as the pair are attacked by a group of walkers, we’re introduced to a completely new trio of characters pulled right from the Walking Dead comic books.

As mentioned, one of the more interesting, if not alarming, parts of Inmates is the actions of young Lizzie. Her actions here throw up all kinds of questions about certain things back in the prison, such as who was torturing rodents and who was feeding the walkers. Maybe all is not as clear as we were led to believe. Similarly, the arrival of new characters at the episode’s close throws up a whole host of possibilities, and could lead to some potentially brilliant moments as certain arcs develop.

Inmates does a great job of bringing viewers up to speed with several characters, including some faces that you may not have expected to see, and further sets the tone for what promises to be a long and gruelling continuation of Season 4 for the show’s principle characters. Shocks, action, answers, questions – Inmates delivers on a whole host of fronts and promises a lot more to come.
