TV Review: ARROW Season 2, Episode 20 ‘Seeing Red’

With three episodes left to follow Seeing Red in Season 2, things get shaken up on a huge scale here. When we left the previous The Man Under the Hood episode, Isabel Rochev (Summer Glau) was seemingly brought back to life via Deathstroke (Slade Wilson) and the mirakuru-enhanced blood of Roy Harper (Colton Haynes). Similarly, Deathstroke had created himself an army of mirakuru-riddled soldiers.

Seeing Red picks things up in the aftermath of this, with the Arrow (Stephen Amell) having taken the unconscious Roy to the Arrow-cave. After Roy awakens and alludes the clutches of Diggle (David Ramsey) and Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards), the hunt is on to track down the possessed Harper. When the Arrow and Canary (Caity Lotz) finally do track him down, courtesy of a tip-off from Sin (Bex Taylor-Klaus), it soon becomes apparent that Roy isn’t Roy. Unstable, unstoppable and massively pissed off, Roy well and truly takes the fight to Ollie and Sara, leaving the Arrow in need of medical treatment.

Away from Team Arrow, things are coming to a head between Moira (Susanna Thompson) and daughter Thea (Willa Holland). With Moira’s mayoral run stepping up a gear, the relationship between the Queen ladies seems more fractured than ever. On the plus side, the relationship between Oliver and his mother seems to finally find some peace. To emphasis the pair’s relationship, we’re treated to a younger Oliver and Moira in flashback form, where we get an insight into the once playboy ways of young Master Queen.

Central to this episode is Thea, with Roy out to find her, Moira out to build bridges with her, and Oliver out to protect her. After we see several instances of Roy overstepping the mark against bouncers and police officers, the big question is whether Roy Harper is now too far gone. It’s certainly the topic of the day within Team Arrow. The Emerald Archer and his pals find themselves in debate over just how to deal with Roy’s frenzied actions, and the only option may be to take him down. Permanently.

If all of the above wasn’t enough for Seeing Red to continue the high standard of Arrow’s Season 2, there are two other happenings that make this episode a must see. Firstly, somebody else learns Oliver’s dirty little secret. Yes, the cat is out of the bag once more. Secondly, and more importantly, the finale of this episode is fantastic. As ever with Arrow, resolution on one front only seems to lead to further troubles elsewhere. And that is most definitely the case here, when we’re given an amped-up, emotional final 5 minutes that’s as tense as the show has given us so far.

Whilst Seeing Red features an early beating for Oliver Queen, the final moments give Ollie an even bigger emotional beating. Like we mentioned earlier, there’s now three episodes left in this season. Arrow finds itself perfectly positioned and poised to give fans a pulse-racing climax to this remarkably strong second year for the show. Oliver Queen has been well and truly punished, now it’s time for him to fight back. The thing is, Deathstroke looks like he still has plenty left up his sleeve.
