With lists and countdowns all the rage these days, DK Publishing has looked to capitalize on that with their latest release, The WWE Book of Top 10s. Pulling from the company’s vast history – it was founded way back in 1952 by Jess McMahon and Toots Mondt – this book is made up of one hundred lists of varying nature as it looks to reach out to grappling fans of all ages.
As far as what to expect from this new release, the book really is just a case of ‘does exactly what it says on the tin’ as each page is adorned with lists aplenty, with topics bouncing from the greatest superstars of all time, to the greatest wrestling families, to the best catchphrases, to the most extreme moments, to odd pairings, to the hottest up and coming talent, to any sort of topic you could possibly think of. Here we really do have a vast array of various rundowns that we could in no way possibly do justice in this review without turning it into a 2,000-word write-up.
What makes The WWE Book of Top 10s most enjoyable, though, is that it is a fun and engaging read that you can pick up at a moment’s notice and devour in bitesize chunks. Rather than being bogged down by hefty, lengthy words, the content has been kept brief and to the point so that it’s a smooth and easy read – which is something that will appeal to both younger and older generations. Additionally, the actual superstars and performers featured span across so many years of the pro wrestling business (which you totally won’t ever find us labelling “sports entertainment”, sorry Vince), with notable names ranging from the likes of Bruno Sammartino and Verne Gagne, through to Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair, through to Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels, through to Steve Austin and The Rock, and bringing things right up to the biggest stars of today such as John Cena, Kevin Owens, AJ Styles, and Roman Reigns (booooooo!). Hell, they even surprised us and included CM Punk at various times throughout The WWE Book of Top 10s 200 pages. And, of course, what would any list-based book be without the inclusion of the ever-great Chris Jericho, who also gets to pen the foreword here as well as being featured in plenty of the actual lists themselves.
A great, fun read that’s full of trivia and memories of yesteryear that will put a smile on the face of any longtime wrestling fans while also appealing to the youngsters of today, The WWE Book of Top 10s certainly tops the list when it comes to entertaining wrestling reads. And if you don’t agree with that, well, to borrow a line from six-time World Champion Jericho, you just made the list!
