Produced by The Movie Partnership, Val Kilmer is back on the screen in the thriller The Super.
This gem of a horror yarn tells of Phil Lodge (Flueger), a widower who moves into a Manhattan apartment block with his two daughters. Unfortunately, pretty soon he has to contend with the fact that the building seems to be suffering an ever-increasing number of disappearances from tenants in the building.
Before long, the finger of suspicion points to gruff loner Walter (Kilmer), who seems to be taking an uncanny interest in Lodge’s daughters, who wander around the place into corners they’re not supposed to. Inevitably, Lodge warns Walter to keep away and decides to try and frame him for the murder of one of the tenants by planting evidence. However, Walter’s involvement seems to be going a little bit further into a far darker place – and one that even Lodge might well have to confront if he is to stop the ever-growing evil within the bricks….
OK, for the first half of this film, you might well think this is going great guns into all-too-familiar territory. Horror fans will tap into the passable jump moments, of which there are one or two, plus some neat make-up and gore. It’s a done deal and what you would want.
However, stick with this for a delightfully twisted second half and a few revelations that will bolt you upright at the film begins to reach its compact eighty-five minute running time.
This writer would loathe to divulge some of the twists in The Super as it’s a movie that yearns to be discovered for yourselves. Kilmer is fine in the role of Walter and it’s great to see him back on screen, albeit in a supporting role. Fans of Top Gun will doubtlessly hope for an alert, fit Kilmer in his imminent return as Iceman.
In the meantime, pay your deposit (or viewing subscription) and call on The Super.
