With burdened characters in hapless predicaments, The Few tells the story of numerous survivors during a zombie apocalypse. Nobody knows what is causing these people to eat each other and spread the infection, but it soon becomes apparent that not everyone is prone to the infection. The Few being a certain number of people who are immune to the zombies (AKA shufflers), could possibly be the answer to end this cataclysm.
At first, it seems to be another generic zombie plotline in which everyone is clueless to what zombies actually are. Whilst it does have all the stereotypical tropes of a drama revolving around the undead, it does, however, have an edgy plot twist revealed in Issue Two; a mystery that keeps you wanting more. A possible cure to infection, the ominous gunky chemical that keeps zombies at bay, the plot thickens. Dave McCluskey’s writing style, while an odd one, keeps the pace going with snappy dialogue and getting straight to the point. The characters might not realise what’s going on, but we’ve all seen 28 Days Later and read The Walking Dead, right? If not, then this perhaps isn’t your thing.
The sketchy cartoon style and vibrant colours work for this genre of comic; it’s dramatic and edgy with some really gory moments. Artist Nicholas O’Gorman gets right down to the nitty gritty, he also does a great job with the cover work and the layouts throughout. The Few is now a successful Kickstarter campaign with more page turning issues to come. It’s an easy and enjoyable read for a fan of the living dead genre.
