GAME REVIEW: STAR WARS X-WING: IG2000 / DESIGNER: JAMES KNIFFEN, COREY KONIECZKA, JASON LITTLE / PUBLISHER: FANTASY FLIGHT / RELEASE DATE: OUT NOW

With the announcement of the Scum and Villainy faction for the Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures Game, you may have wondered what they were going to do for the larger sort of assault craft? Though it’s a game about X-Wings versus TIE fighters, fire support is always nice. After all, the rebels have the Millennium Falcon and the Imperials have both the Decimator and Boba Fett’s signature ship, Slave-1. Even though Slave-1 can be adapted to fight for the new Scum faction, it still looked like the criminals and mercenaries were going to get short changed.

Luckily, Boba isn’t the only bounty hunter in town; IG-2000 is the customised battle ship of IG-88, the robotic killing machine. It’s a large-based model, which means it’s about twice the size of your standard X-Wing. The piece itself is a well painted and light bit of kit. The design is nice and scary looking; it’s not a grandiose as the Lambda Shuttle or the Falcon, instead it looks like a sleek killing machine, which is exactly what it is.

The cards and rules supplied with the model support this approach as well. For a start, it’s crammed with weapons cards and special move. They are enough options in the box to allow you to field multiple IG-2000’s in one battle, if you’re willing to shell out for the models. Rules-wise, at 36 points  the ship is a reasonable investment; it’s likely to be the largest model in your fleet unless your planning on running a big game. The multiple iterations of the ship are also designed to work together; the premise is that they’re all essentially ran by the same AI. This allows for all sorts of stunts during combat and makes an all IG-2000 fleet a really interesting idea. Various upgrades are quite neat as well; some of the available weapons are pretty deadly and work well during play. Rules-wise, the ships aren’t that robust, but with planning and care you can really pack a wallop.

IG-2000 is a neat expansion for the Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures Game and provides some much needed fire support to the faction. If you prefer to hit and run, whilst still having lots of options open should the game change, this is a great option for you.
