Only a handful of days after the debut of The Bad Batch on Disney+, the second episode Cut and Run arrives. After the 72 minute premier episode, the second is a far more trim 28 minutes, and sees the team aboard the Havoc Marauder head for Saleucami and their friend Cut Lawquane, looking for a way to stay off the grid and away from the hungry eyes of the newly formed Galactic Empire. Easier said than done, as travel around the galaxy proves to be a far trickier proposition than expected. The chain codes introduced in The Mandalorian come into play, a requirement for intergalactic travel, and as wanted fugitives from the law the Bad Batch don’t have them.
Cue Tech, the team’s smartest member, to figure out a way to create fake chain codes. The team get their ship impounded and once at the spaceport they inevitably get into a tough spot as the Lawquanes get passage off planet while Clone Force 99 make good their own escape in the Havoc Marauder. Before their escape made good, Omega is playing with the Lawquaine children and wanders out of the family garden area, unwittingly bringing herself into close contact with a nexu stalking in the trees. In her wide-eyed innocence she doesn’t realise she is in danger, and it’s only the quick actions of the children and the clones who scare off the nexu and save Omega.
As with the first episode, the visuals are lush and engaging, the music from Kevin Kiner a confident accompaniment to the action onscreen, and the characters continue to grow. Given the chance to live with the Lawquaine family, Omega chooses her batch brothers, a decision Hunter especially appears to appreciate. A slower paced but no less key episode.
