The Assault Frigate Mark II is a funny looking frog of a starship. It’s a bulbous-looking contraption, bristling with bombs and fire power, and provides a stark contrast to the sharp lines and uniform grey of the Imperial fleet. It’s a nice sculpt, though it sits low on its stand. It’s also well painted and only the most hardcore hobbyist will feel the urge to repaint it.
As per usual, there are two sets of rules for the model; an offensive and defensive set of stats. They’re both very similar. The frigate isn’t terrible manoeuvrable compared to other Rebel ships and it’s not as tough as a Star Destroyer, but it can really bang out damage and any Imperial ship deciding simply to run up and hit it will sorely regret the move.
Additional rules card-wise, we’ve got all sorts of goodies. The expansion comes with Admiral Garm Bel Iblis, whose special ability generates extra order cards for your fleet. The upshot of this is that you can respond to almost any change on the battlefield far faster than you’d expect. Other add-ons include extra defensive technologies that allow you to avoid catastrophic damage and some nifty guns which make it easier to cripple your foe, and you get a lovely little pit fighter of a warship here.
Rebel commanders looking to add some more bite to their fleet will probably be tempted to take more than one of these and, though it’s not designed to be a Death Star killer, the Assault Frigate Mark II is a welcome addition.
