Eun-ha (Park So-dam) is a junkyard worker by day, and a fugitive courier by night. However, one night during what should be a routine “package delivery”, Eun-ha ends up having to protect a young boy from ensuing corrupt cops in the new Korean action flick, Special Delivery.
Written and directed by Park Dae-min, this thrilling action film proves that even when you take a basic story that we’ve seen a hundred times, Asia (especially Korea) just does it better than the West. Yes, a lot of the story beats are the same – corrupt cops, a protagonist who has to care for a child that they didn’t want to look after, fast cars – but what sets it apart from its American peers is that the performances and set pieces feel genuinely more adrenaline inducing and engaging.
Park So-dam, fresh off her staggering performance in the Academy award winning Parasite, is superb as Eun-ha. She’s badass, incredible at driving and a dab hand at improvising whilst fighting with her trusty screwdriver. The ensemble cast has its part to play too. Jung Hyun-jun as Seo-won is one of those rare instances of a child in despair that is tolerable and is compelling to watch as their relationship with their protector grows (clearly their chemistry was helped by their previous work together).
With some well choreographed set pieces and strong performances, Special Delivery is a perfect popcorn action film for an evening of entertainment – we just think that with a bit more originality, it would be even better.
Special Delivery is out now on VOD platforms from Signature Entertainment
