COMIC BOOK REVIEW: SINNERS #1 / AUTHOR: SIMON BIRKS / ARTIST: R.H. STEWART, LYNDON WHITE / PUBLISHER: THOROUGHLY PROFESSIONAL PUBLISHING  / RELEASE DATE: OUT NOW

All round creative type Simon Birks has penned a dreamy tale of Hope, a Hispanic woman who wakes up out of sorts and out of place, trying to piece together the fractured memory of the previous night. You quickly get the sense that she’s not a reliable narrator, but you’re more than happy to go along for the ride. Given the ambiguous ending to the first issue, it’ll be a series well worth sticking with.

The settings seem to exist in all times and yet none at all, evoking all the lucid reality of dreams and hallucinations. R.H. Stewart’s art has a vastness to it, all chaotic black lines and pastel shades and sometimes needing an entire page to get at the emptiness at the heart of the story.

The narration is printed as if torn from the pages of a pulp novel, with a gritty stripped back style reminiscent of Raymond Chandler hunkering down a particular gruesome state of affairs. Steeped in supernatural weirdness, Sinners might be a competitor for the seminal Hellblazer, but at the very least it’s not a series you’ll want to miss out on. With the startling front cover from letterer Lyndon White how could you resist?
