Magic: The Gathering is a fantasy franchise currently trying to conquer the world. The card game has been around for 27 years and has amassed a long and deep lore. It also has some key heroes that are instantly recognisable to fans of the game. These long-storied heroes have been turned into plush toys called Phunny.

Ajani Goldmane is a Leonine, a lion man who has lead armies and faced the gods themselves. He’s a Planeswalker and legendary mage and hunter. His story is an epic one and there’s been some amazing art and stories produced about his. His Phunny plush is adorable. This albino lion has cute cat-like ears, a soft mane, a swishy tail and a rather charming attention to detail.

Chandra Nalaar is the pyromantic planeswalker who uses her mastery of fire to protect the universe from monstrous threats. She’s part of Gatewatch, a team of heroes who’ve saved countless worlds. Her Phunny is very cute dolly. From the oversized goggles to her enormous eyes, this is a very lovely toy, though less striking than the rest in the range.

Garruk Wildspeaker is a barbarian, warrior and druid who has undertaken some of the most epic quests in the Magic: The Gathering canon. He’s essentially a swords and sorcery-style hero, wielding his axe and charging into battle, usually allied with savage beasts for extra impact. The art and stories surrounding this hero are epic. His Phunny carries a huge grin and an axe. It’s beautifully detailed and even the axe is nice.

Finally, we have Nicol Bolas. The God-Emperor of Madara, God-Pharaoh, Forever Serpent and Dragon God. Nicol is one of the big-bad beasties of the Magic: The Gathering story, a self-style mind-ripper and death bringer who seeks absolute power. The Phunny of this terrible monster is one of the cutest things we’ve seen. From him huge yellow eyes, golden highlights, fuzzy wings and dumb expression on his face, if you didn’t know any better you’d assume Nicol was the fluffiest monster on the planes.

These are collectables aimed at a mostly grown-up market but they also happen to be great toys. They’re very nice to look at, very well made and very, very geeky. Perfect presents for the Magic fan in your life.
