BOOK REVIEW: LENORE: PINK BELLIES / AUTHOR: ROMAN DIRGE / ARTIST: ROMAN DIRGE / PUBLISHER: TITAN COMICS / RELEASE DATE: OUT NOW

Pink Bellies sees the latest instalment of hilarity and the macabre from everyone’s favourite cute little dead girl, Lenore, in a four-issue story arc that brings us closer to the mysterious Taxidermy’s past, without skimping on the usual ridiculously silly and macabre adventures along the way.

Bringing together all four issues of the classic Who Will Die storyline released over issues 2.8 – 2.11, Roman Dirge certainly knows how to build up a major character death in an increasingly silly and horrific manner that doesn’t spare on the body count – even if some of those bodies are reanimated chickens and pickle hats.

The background of the mysterious Taxidermy is one that’s always been shrouded in mystery in past issues; where did he come from, and just why did he decide to leave Lenore looking after his skittish pet Malakai all those years ago? All of the head scratching plot arcs over the years are finally unveiled in this epic story that certainly has enough twists and turns along the way, neatly tying up a few unanswered questions from previous issues in a rather spooky bow.

The usual silly and ridiculous adventures crop up along the way, whether it’s hiding from a ghostbusting crew, planting Ragamuffin in a somewhat unusual cave (that in usual Lenore fashion leads to a few gags at his expense along the way) or fighting with Egyptian gods, there’s no end to the hilarity in this tense yet hilariously daft story arc.

Dirge certainly doesn’t fail to deliver on his promises; you may find yourself pleasantly surprised at the revealed character death and the plot twists along the way, as we learn more about the delightfully dark Taxidermy’s past.

A story arc that will certainly have you smirking along the way at Lenore’s adorably sinister and amusing actions, Pink Bellies has all the usual macabre, silly and humorous plot twists that you’ve come to expect from Roman Dirge. Fans will certainly be entertained and delighted.
