Kill Team is Games Workshop’s small scale skirmish game that has gone through numerous design revisions over the years. The most recent version mixes storytelling with quick table-top skirimish action to create a highly replayable, accessible and addictive gaming experience. The Kill Team Octarius book originally appeared in a limited edition ‘big box’ set designed to get gamers into Kill Team in one sweet hit. It’s now available on it’s own, allowing gamers to pick and choose the components they want to play (as well as saving some space on the shelf.)
It’s a 96 page soft-back, that details the horrific Octarius Warzone. Pitted against each other the brutal Orks and human Astra Militarum (aka Imperial Guard). Specifically, the campaign looks at the Death Korp of Krieg, gas mask wearing humans who have a strict doctrine of duty and sacrifice; a culture that considers death in the service of their god, The Emperor, to be the only thing worth living for. They are up against Ork Kommandos, a strain of alien killing machine obsessed with strategy, cunning and cruelty.
There’s an inherent grim humour to both sides, and the book covers the conflict between the two (and the greater war) quite well. The bulk of the rules cover the models and scenery that can be found in the core Kill Team starter set, as well as ideas to inspire you to paint and convert those pieces. There’s a fair degree of personalisation to consider here and that’s sort of the point; this is your game and your campaign.
The scenarios themselves are very accessible; the idea here seems to be make it easy to play but to also encourage a degree of improvisation and creativity. This is a solid way to get the most out of your Kill Team Starter Set and also a great way to learn more about the world of Warhammer 40,000.
