COMIC BOOK REVIEW: DEJAH THORIS VOLUME 7 – DUEL TO THE DEATH / AUTHOR: ROBERT PLACE NAPTON / ARTIST: CARLOS RAFAEL, DEBORA CARITA, CARLOS LOPEZ / PUBLISHER: DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT / RELEASE DATE: APRIL 14TH
If you like you heroes larger than life, female, well-built, scarcely-dressed and from Mars then you must already be a fan of Dejah Thoris, who originally appeared in Edgar Rice Burroughs novels back in the day and is the princess who will one day wed John Carter.
Dynamite Entertainment has released Volume 7 in its Dejah Thoris series, and this collection consists of issue 31 – 37 of Warlords of Mars, covering over 190 glorious, full-colour pages.
The first story finds Dejah Thoris sent into the future of Mars desperate to find a way back and change history. She is aided by one of her own descendants, Dejah Carter, who is remarkably similar in appearance to our princess, doubling the amount of barely concealed female flesh on display.
Apart from the salacious thrills of Dejah’s ‘costume’, the stories are bold, brave and packed with adventure, intrigue and treachery. Once Dejah returns to her own time, the bulk of the volume is filled with the story of Dejah’s previously unknown niece; her brother makes an appearance and there is a good story of family betrayal and a recognisable tale of desire for power and misplaced lust for revenge.
Apart from the wonderful illustration of Dejah and all things Martian by Carlos Rafael and Debora Carita, mention must also be made of Carlos Lopez’s use of colour. Each page is a well balanced visual treat adding to the overall feel of quality the oozes from every frame.
If you want solid entertainment, you can do a lot worse than pick up this volume of stories.
