Dragons are pretty important in Dungeons & Dragons, the clue is in the name. An encounter with a dragon is always memorable and they tend to mark a significant point in any game being played. The red dragon is a great villain; it hordes gold, breathes fire and they tend to be evil; it’s your classic dragon and has a distinctive look.
The D&D Nolzur’s Marvelous Miniatures: Young Red Dragon is exactly what it says it is; an unpainted model of a young dragon in flight. It’s primed, which means it’s ready to paint straight away and the applies pretty smoothly onto the piece. Of course, you can paint your dragon any colour you want but the model is sculpted with that trademark grimace and the impressive horns that D&D fans associate with the red.
The ‘young’ in the title means this isn’t a huge table-breaking model, but the pose makes it impressive; it’s in mid-flight and breathing fire. The ‘breath’ is a translucent piece of plastic so you have options when painting this. It comes with a flight stand which connects directly to the model’s chest. This does limit possible poses slightly, but nothing that can’t be fixed with modelling putty if you really don’t want to use the stand. The wings are in a ‘hover’ pose so you may need to be careful when painting; they’re quite close together.
Overall this is a great piece for people who like painting fantasy models and a useful accessory for playing D&D. It’s impressive enough to be memorable and will look good on the shelf when you’re not playing games. If you ever wanted a pet red dragon this is as close as you’re going to get.
