Titan Comics continue to impress with their approach to their Doctor Who comic book range.  They’ve pulled out all the stops time and time again, hiring the best artists and writers they can find, to capture the very essence of each incarnation of the Doctor.

Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor Year Two Issue 1 puts the Eagle Award winning writer Robbie Morrison in charge of number 12’s adventures. Morrison is better known for a spot of swashbuckling with his sci-fi space opera Nikolai Dante, and it’s easy to see why he’s a good fit for the Time Lord who looks like Peter Capaldi. Morrison is at his best when his lead has a flair for the dramatic.

Morrison also seems to be having a blast writing Clara. A character that has been more than a little lacklustre in the TV series comes to life in the comic book; Clara is brave, clever and resourceful on the printed page. The first issue of this new series opens with Clara going off on her own to investigate something amiss in the wilds of Scotland. Something is terribly wrong with a private school, something that could well be alien and strange. A quick call to her alien ally and she’s off to save the world on her own.

Rachael Stott provides some stunning artwork here. She captures action very well and gives the whole affair a cinema-realistic look that suits this incarnation of the Doctor quite well. Colourist Ivan Nunes compliments Stott’s stylings very well, lending darker hues to the entire work that makes the whole thing look glossy and dramatic.

Overall, this is a strong start to a promising series. We have a spooky school, a brave companion and an utterly marvellous Time Lord. We have high hopes for this series, and you should check it out.
