At the climax of the Cold War, a former Russian soldier tells her tale to an intruder of the secret mission she undertook at the end of the Second World War. Along with her crew, she was tasked with transporting a secret cargo to Stalin. It wasn’t an easy trip, however, as German soldiers, nicknamed werewolves, are just as keen to get their hands on the prize.
This atmospheric alternate war film has enough creepiness to keep it within the realms of horror, particularly with the use of a hallucinogenic drug. Written and directed by Ben Parker (who wrote The Girl on the Third Floor), it’s a brooding tale of survival and loyalty and a features mesmerising turn from Harriet Walker, the older version of the character played by Charlotte Vega (who’s pretty good herself). A late ally comes in the form of Harry Potter’s Tom Felton, but the male accolades go to Barry Ward, who gives a solid performance, as does Dan Renton Skinner, whose despicable character traits add some extra friction to the team.
Burial is an interesting tale and is told well, framing it in the early ‘90s puts more perspective on things and there’s peril not far at each step. The footage of the troupe on the road near the forest has a Walking Dead vibe but despite the threat not being fantastical (there are no actual lycanthropes, unfortunately), there’s plenty of suspense and firepower.
Burial is released on digital on September 26th, with early EST on select platforms from September 12th from 101 Films.
